7 Zip is an open source program which is actually a powerful file archiver. If you believe that WinZip is the only good program available for compressing or zipping files, then you are badly mistaken. Once you try 7 Zip, you would surely feel that it is the best file compression tool you might have ever come across.

7 Zip supports quite a number of file formats which include ZIP, TAR, GZ, and its very own 7z format. And if you are looking for a feature which would overshadow the existence of WinZip is its capability to create TAR and GZ archives which are compatible on LINUX and UNIX operating systems.

Its user interface will overwhelm you and it has been tested and proved that 7z formats are 40% smaller than conventional ZIP formats. 7 Zip also allows you to password protect your compressed files. It is not just a substitute of WinZip, in fact 7 Zip is a bit more powerful and if you use Windows and Unix / Linux OS, then this file compression tool will prove to be a great help.

  • Amazing user interface
  • Supports ZIP, TAR, GZ and 7Z

I prefer using it rather than the popular WinZip for one simple reason that it is superior to WinZip. Its very own 7z file format is about 40% smaller than other compression formats we generally use. Although, it is a bit slow but the output it generates is worth waiting.

It is one reliable program which supports number of formats which include ZIP, TAR, GZ and 7Z. And its capability of creating TAR and GZ archives make it a bigger file archiving tool.

Its user interface is quite similar to other file archivers and the main reason behind it is to keep it very similar to enhance the comfort levels of the people.

7-Zip is compatible on Windows 7 / Vista / XP / 2008 / 2003 / 2000 / NT / ME / 98 and powerful command line lets you use this on Linux / Unix OS.

It supports number of formats which include Packing / unpacking of 7z, ZIP, GZIP, BZIP2 and TAR and just unpacking of ARJ, CAB, CHM, CPIO, DEB, DMG, HFS, ISO, LZH, LZMA, MSI, NSIS, RAR, RPM, UDF, WIM, XAR and Z.

  • Very powerful with user friendly interface
  • Supports almost all the compressed formats
  • Supports TAR and GZ, which can be used on Unix and Linux operating systems

  • Speed of compression is slower that other file archivers

7 zip is an all in one file archiver which is must have tool on your computer. It replaces the very old and popular WinZip and offers all the same services in an improved manner. It supports number of formats and the 7z file format (its own format) offered by 7 zip is about 40% smaller than the conventional ones. With a user friendly interface, 7 zip is very much capable of substituting WinZip.
