Review

Battle for Wesnoth is a free open source turn-based fantasy strategy game. The game was created in 2003 and has been developed ever since with the contribution of several people around the world. I tried it on Linux Mint but it also has versions for Windows and Mac OS X computers.

You can start with a quick tutorial that will explain the basic actions that you have to do in the game. It won’t take too much time to learn how to play it because it’s fairly simple, there are only a few actions available but there’s a lot of room to express your creativity.

The overall look and feel of the game is quite nice, the music sound effects create a nice atmosphere and the graphics are neat, not too fancy but enough to give you a great feeling of the fantasy world.

I’ve played it for a few hours before writing the review and I can tell you that it’s pretty addictive, mainly because of the great storyline that gets you from your real world to a world of fantasy with heroes and mythical kingdoms. You can also play the game online against real opponents but you won’t get bored in single player mode either. There are 16 races in the game, 6 major factions and a great variety of scenarios that you can try. You can also create your own custom units or write brand new scenarios or campaigns!

Verdict

Battle For Wesnoth is a great open source game, entertaining, addictive and virtually unlimited, you can create your own campaigns if you get bored with the ones that are already available. The campaigns are very challenging, you have to use your brain and tactical skills to defeat those orcs 🙂
