Overview

TORCS is a free , multi platform, open source racing car simulator, with various cars an tracks available in multiple events like championships, endurance races or challenge races.

Review

Making a racing game and releasing it as open source is an outstanding thing by itself. And if the game is playable and entertaining, well, you already have yourself a “giant leap for mankind” ūüôā Right now TORCS features more than 50 different cars, 20 tracks and 50 opponents and you can play it with your keyboard, mouse, joystick or steering wheel. The first thing that you have to do is to create your player, select your car and preferences.

After that you will have plenty of races to choose from, endurance races, championships or practice sessions. I played it with my keyboard and I can say that the controls are kinda sensitive but realistic, you really have to drive well if you want to stay on the track.

As for the graphics I think that the game is pretty decent, nice car models and tracks and a few visual effects like lighting, skidmarks or glowing brake disks.

You can watch the video below to get a feeling of how the game is played and all the fun that it has to offer.

The only big minus of this open source game is the lack of an online racing mode, but the program authors say that this is their next big goal. I think that with an online mode this free game will become a sensation all over the world. Right now you can play with “real” opponents only on your computer, in the split screen mode there can be up to four human players.

A great thing about it is that there are several websites that offer cars and tracks that you can easily add to your game.

Verdict

Despite the minuses TORCS is a great open source game, there has been a lot of work put into it and I really hope that the game developers won’t stop and that they will give us better future versions, maybe with an online racing mode too. Overall TORCS is a very good game, realistic and entertaining. And it’s open source!
