IZArc – Free Zip Archive Utility

by James 14 November 2012 10 Comments

IZArc is a freeware archive utility that can compress and decompress virtually any type of archive file. It can also handle CD image files.

You can’t use a PC nowadays without an archive utility program. After you install Windows for example you will definitely have an archived file to unpack sooner or later. It’s just like when you move into a new home, you have to unpack some boxes and get your stuff out.

My favorite archive utility was until now TUGzip, mostly because it was the only program from those that I tested that managed to unpack a problematic .rar archive. I’ve been using TUGzip for a few months now, and there are no problems to report. But since many of you recommended that I should give IZArc a try I decided to run a little comparative test and see which one is better. I didn’t use a stopwatch, but on a first impression IZArc is a little bit faster than TUGzip.

The features that the two programs have to offer are mostly identical, maybe with IZArc having more to give when it comes to CD image files that you can convert from one format to another.

So far there’s nothing much to separate the two programs. IZArc seems to be a little bit faster, but TUGzip definitely looks better. I guess the final decision will be made by going through the list of archive files that the two programs support. Both lists are very long, and after going through both of them the results are quite clear. Both programs support the most common archive file types, but IZArc can handle quite a few more than TUGzipB64, BZA, CDI, ENC, GZA, HA, IMG, MDF, MBF, MIM, PAK, PDI, PK3, TZ, UUE, WAR, XXE, Z. If you add the fact that IZArc can convert various CD image files to ISO I guess it can be sensible to say that IZArc is the new Freeware Mission best free archive utility.

Supports virtually any archive file type and also converts CD image files to ISO.

 Compatible with Windows Vista.

 Could use a facelift.

IZArc is a must have freeware program, one of the first programs that you’ll have to get after installing Windows. And a funny thing to wrap it up: the IZArc slogan is “compress the future”… I don’t know what you think but to me it sounds quite scary, I’d like to expand the future as much as I can, not compress it 🙁 Anyway, a very good freeware program.

I have to say, I could not agree with you in 100%, but that’s just my IMHO, which indeed could be very wrong.
p.s. You have a very good template for your blog. Where have you got it from?

The template is a free one which I tweaked here and there. I got it from wordpress.reviewitonline.net

    I like 7-zip better.

  • RedDS said:

why is 7zip The popular freeware archvier? its a piece of crap compared to IZArc. IZArc rules!! Keep up the great reviews!!!

I think theres more hype around Izarc than anything else. It hung on my pc every time i tried to open an archive over 500mb. The other thing thats weird about IZarc is that its describes its as the best compression program on its website which doesnt seem like the type of thing any respectable developer would carry on with.

  • Johnny Karp said:

I never noticed any abnormal behavior from IZarc with larger files…

have you ever heard of “peazip” then just try it.it can open more than 81 archive file except .alz.izarc can open 44 archive it also fails to open a .alz file. But you can open this .alz file with alzip.it has a freeversion.

Rono, you’re writing more than me on this blog lately 🙂 Maybe you want to write some reviews too, I’d be happy to have you as a guest blogger. As for the zip programs, I’m very happy with IZArc, it’s very good and it’s open source.
