Best Free Video Converter

by Johnny Karp 16 August 2008 3 Comments

Hello friends, welcome to the final days of the Freeware Mission, trying to have a freeware only PC. I’m going to add a free video converter to the list today, the best one, of course. I’ve been using AutoGK for a few years now, but I feel it’s somehow “old”, it didn’t develop as fast as the things around it.

The freeware program that I chose is MeGUI – it’s open source, and supports the best codecs and containers available at this time. It’s also very reliable. Here’s a quick presentation of the containers and codecs you can use with it:

Input: AviSynth scripts (AVS), AVI, D2V, VOB/TS/MPG/PVA
Output: MP4, MKV, AVI

Video Codecs: x264, XviD, Libavcodec MPEG-4, Snow
Audio Codecs: AAC (Nero, Faac), MP3

There is also a very promising freeware program called MediaCoder, but I think it still isn’t developped enough to make a reliable program. So I’ll keep MeGUI until something better comes along. You might want to check out the guides and tutorials before using it.
You can download MeGUI from here, it’s open source!
