Best Free Software Update Program
Here we are, the last episode of the Freeware Mission. Or the last episode before the grand finale. I’ve installed 50 freeware programs since the beginning, and my PC is feeling great with only freeware in it! I think it’s normal that the last freeware program that will be installed, the 51st, is a software update monitoring tool, a program that will automatically search for updates for my installed freeware programs.
There are three freeware programs that were interesting enough to be tested: FileHippo.com Update Checker, UpdateStar and SUMo (Software Update Monitor). FileHippo.com Update Checker is still in beta, and I was a little bit disappointed with it, didn’t find many of my installed programs. UpdateStar is an interesting program, but I think it still needs some work, because it only recognized the programs in the Control Panel Add/Remove Software list, and even read some of the program versions badly.
SUMo is still the best option available: it scans the Program Files folders too and recognized my installed program versions without any error. The latest version fixed some “false alarms” errors, when the program found updates that didn’t exist. After using it for a while I can tell you that it’s really useful, it remembers your installed programs, scans your PC for newly installed software and gives you the updates accurately.
You can download SUMo from here, it’s free!

[...] SUMo (Software Update Monitoring) – Identifies the software that you have installed in your system and checks the internet for updates. The latest version seems to have corrected most errors, works pretty fine. [...]
Nice review, but have you tried Update Notifier?

I would like to know how you like it compared to Software Informer.
Keep up the good work.
Thanks for the suggestion John, I didn’t know anything about Update Notifier. I’ll give it a try soon.
