Pocket Wikipedia 1.0 – Offline Wiki

by James 22 November 2008 5 Comments

Perhaps the most interesting feature of this freeware, Pocket Wikipedia 1.0, is that it works on Windows PCs, on Pocket PC systems and even under a Linux operating system. I’ve tested it on my Windows XP system, let’s see how it works.

First of all brace yourselves for a long download: the .zip package of the program is 175 MB, so if you have a slow internet connection, you could easily grow a beard waiting for the stuff to come. It requires no installation, just extract the files from the archive and you’re ready to go. You can browse through the articles or search for the word you need.

The database is a selection from the wikipedia articles, having 24 thousand images and about 14 million words. I don’t know why, but the images didn’t show on my computer.

Overall it’s a very useful piece of free software, and the developers say that they are working on a new version. You can download it from here, it’s free!
